Christmas market · Nederlands

Christmas market in Dutch: 16 phrases

Order mulled wine or an alcohol-free punch, sort out the mug deposit, ask the price, pay by card, find the lantern walk or the concert, and start a chat at a standing table. Natural phrases for a winter market evening.

Phrases, not advice. These cards only help you say what you need. They give no medical, legal, tax or financial advice. For any decision, ask the pharmacist, doctor, bank or the official office.

Register: Neutral. At a Dutch "kerstmarkt" people order briefly and informally; "alstublieft" or "graag" is enough, and "je" is normal with other visitors. Mulled wine is "glühwein" (also "warme wijn"). Some markets use a deposit ("statiegeld") on mugs or cups, others do not, so ask. Cards are usually accepted, but not at every stall.

How to read the sounds: g and ch are a rough throat sound, written kh (like Scottish 'loch'), stronger than English h. ou/ui = 'ow'; ij/ei = 'ay' (as in 'say'); eu = a rounded 'uh' (like French 'peu'); uu = 'ew' (say 'ee' with rounded lips); oe = 'oo'. Stress is in CAPITALS.
