New Year phrases in Turkish: 20 phrases

Wish people a happy new year, raise a glass, ask to join a table, find out who is watching the fireworks and where, ask for the last metro, and say thank you, you too. Short, common phrases for New Year's Eve and the winter holidays; secular greetings only.

Phrases, not advice. These cards only help you say what you need. They give no medical, legal, tax or financial advice. For any decision, ask the pharmacist, doctor, bank or the official office.

Review pending: native-speaker review of this card has not happened yet, and the phrases marked "check" are the ones we are least sure of. Use them as a starting point and let the person you speak to correct you.

Register: Informal (friendly). In Turkey New Year's Eve is "yılbaşı". "Sen" is normal with people your age at a party; use "siz" with older people and staff you do not know, and add "Bey" or "Hanım" after a first name to be polite.

How to read the sounds: Turkish is spelled as pronounced. c = j (as in 'jam'), ç = ch, ş = sh, ğ is silent and lengthens the vowel before it, ı (no dot) = a short 'uh' like the a in 'about', ö = the eu of French 'peu', ü = say 'ee' with rounded lips. Hyphens split syllables and CAPITALS mark the stressed one.
